The Dulles South Food Pantry is off to a roaring start thanks to the efforts of hundreds of Dulles South residents. Before the food pantry opened in June, the nearest food pantries serving Dulles South were more than a dozen miles away in Leesburg, Middleburg and Ashburn. While Loudoun County consistently ranks among counties with the highest incomes in America, there are families who need help.
In the first 5 months after opening, the nonprofit, all-volunteer food pantry served 131 unique households and touched 557 people. Nearly 50% of the guests receiving food from the pantry are children and teens. The pantry’s guests have included 64 children who are 5-years old or younger.
The local community has rallied in support of the Dulles South Food Pantry. Food drives and financial donations have come from local churches and temples, schools, scout troops, sports leagues, service organizations, grocery stores, local businesses, and from many individuals. The Dulles South Multipurpose Center and South Riding Town Hall host nonperishable food collection bins which fill up regularly through the generosity of Dulles South residents.
Much work is left to do. Every month new families come. The pantry is raising funds to improve the nutritional quality of available food. The volunteers hope to offer more fresh produce, milk, eggs, and even fresh meat in 2015. We are working with local schools to offer Backpack programs with supplemental food for children in need over the weekend.
